Some ethnologists believe that this story originated during the 14th century, during a period of great famine in medieval Europe, and hence the elements of leaving children to take care of themselves, a house of sweets and even cannibalism.

This staging abandons the element of abandoning one’s own children by replacing it with leaving home in search of adventure. Either way, this story is a children’s classic – exciting, fun, but also instructive.

Fear of the unknown is overcome by a desire to explore. However, everything ends well because the children's resourcefulness allows Ivica and Marica to survive in a very hostile environment and win over the terrible witch. And you get rich along the way.
