Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb is a living place of creation, exhibition, interpretation and preservation of contemporary art in all its manifestations. Its aim is to encourage and nurture an understanding of contemporary art through the professional, innovative and educational use of exhibitions and collections, enabling a wide variety of groups of visitors to learn, be creative and experience uniquely. As a multi-program institution, it mediates heritage and the contemporary scene, from the visual through the performing to the film art, thus making it an active and critical part of the community.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, above all, strives to be a public and autonomous space in which the categories of social engagement, responsibility and equal opportunities for all are tested and questioned on a daily basis. By direct communication with artists and the audience, by respecting their experience, we question what has been achieved so that we can change and empower ourselves.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has more than 12,000 works by domestic and foreign artists in its collections. The works have been collected for more than half a century – since the Museum was founded in 1954 – and cover the period from the mid-twentieth century to the present day, and have been made in various media – painting, sculpture, drawing, graphics, photography, video, film, installations, internet art…

The museum has been operating since 2009 in a new building that allows various multimedia events to take place. The Museum presents its collections and works of contemporary artists in a permanent exhibition, and in the space for occasional exhibitions – exhibitions of the most important authors and appearances on the Croatian and international contemporary scene. Our specialty is the 90-meter-long LED screen on which we project art video works and communicate with passers-by, not just the museum audience.

After almost ten years at the new location, MSU has become one of the symbols of New Zagreb, a lively and recognizable place of creation and interaction, gathering and socializing of all generations where various programs take place every day, from theater and dance performances, film screenings, meetings with artists , critics and curators through children's birthday parties, professional guides, concerts to educational and creative workshops for children, parents, high school students, students, people with disabilities, retirees…
