EXHIBITION “ART WORKS!” / “ART WORKS!”

  • 08.10.2020 – 08.11.2020 / OPEN GALLERY

The Museum of Contemporary Art invites you to the exhibition “Art Works!” Created as part of the international interdisciplinary project “Art Works!” Culture of Resistance and Liberation in Europe ”(Art Works! European Culture of Resistance and Liberation) which includes artistic, cultural and historical-political education of young people. From October 8 to November 8, 2020, the exhibition will be presented in the Open Gallery of the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, then in the Erlauf Erinnert Museum in the town of the same name in Austria and at the beginning of 2021 in Berlin.

The project is organized by the wannseeFORUM Berlin Foundation and HASENHERZ with partners Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art MUSEION Bolzano and Center for Contemporary History Melk Memorial, and brings together groups of young people who in collaboration with European artists explored the resistance and liberation movement World War II. In the process of researching and critically reflecting on this topic, the young participants studied historical sources and works of art and, with the support and mentorship of professional artists, created joint works of art that connect historical findings with values here and today. Artists Anderwald + Grond (Austria), OKO (Croatia), Katja Pratschke (Germany) and Alessandra Ferrini (Great Britain / Italy) with young people then designed and realized works of art on the theme of anti-fascist resistance and its legacy today.

Based on historical and artistic works on the theme of resistance, the resulting works focus on questions about the historical and cultural roots crucial to understanding today’s Europe, but also its heritage in individual countries. The MSU Youth Club, in cooperation with the multimedia artist OKO (Marina Mesar), researched and dealt with the topic of partisan resistance in Croatia, more precisely – the role of women in it. Active participants in the anti-fascist movement, women took on many traditionally male roles during World War II, as evidenced, among other things, by the extremely high representation of partisans in the Yugoslav People’s Liberation Army, as well as numerous medals they received. The work “Resistance: Then and Now / Resistance: Yesterday and Today” encompasses and correlates the anti-fascist resistance during the Second World War, and various forms of resistance of our modern times. Protests against gender inequality, racism, nationalism and similar forms of discrimination are forms of resistance that we continue to witness in the fight for peace of each individual.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, the resulting works were presented live on Saturday, May 9, 2020 on the websites and social networks of institutions involved in the project, as well as on the official website of the project where the recording of the transfer can be viewed via LINK .
