Old Vlastimil Reiner is a World War II veteran and former political prisoner returning to the Czech Republic after a long life in Oregon. When he meets his old friend Antonín Trcka again, a man behind whom the path of life is similar to his own, Vlastimil, with his cooperation, will plan perhaps the last great action in their lives, something that will be talked about for a long time and will remain in history. Namely, they want to find and kill the infamous prosecutor from the communist era, who sent them both to prison sentences at the time during the 1950s. To make matters worse, the prosecutor avoided punishment for his misdeeds after the fall of communism, and this is an additional reason for Vlastimil and Antonín to find him and take revenge on him.

In 2020, out of ten nominations for the most prestigious Czech film award, the Czech Lion won those in the categories of the best major (Jiří Schmitzer from Striženo, abbreviated and Jiří Menzel’s Visibab Ceremony, The David Jones Process and The Great Tricky Years based on Michal Viewegh’s prose) and the supporting side Mrkvička from The Assassination of Jiří Sequens and David Ondríček’s Grandhotel), the acclaimed and quite successful humorous thriller drama by screenwriter and director duo Martin Dušek and Ondřej Provazník is a feature film debut in the careers of both authors. Over the past fifteen years, Dušek and Provazník have established themselves separately as screenwriters and directors of short feature and documentary films and TV series, and Starčeki is their second joint project, after the award-winning documentary Poustevna, das ist Paradies from 2007. It is a casual, unpretentious and entertaining achievement in which the authors quite skilfully cross the genres of crime drama and comedy, relying on satire and mostly comedy of character and mentality, and with hints of situation comedy. The direction is safe and dynamic, the narration is fast and flowing, and the actors’ interpretations are led by Schmitzer and Mrkvički, who are prone to self-irony.
